It is like this net.art got rid of the high-class fanciness of art institutions and galleries. Everyone had a platform and community to show off all kinds of genres of art. Since the art community crashed in the 80s the internet helped it make a comeback in the 90s. Mailing list were a hit, which is cool because everything uses those nowadays. The digital era was offering new financial possibilities even for niche providers. I mean even now most artists are online. You can either try to make a name for yourself online or go through the traditional gallery and institution ways. Although it isn't through web pages but social media. Artists do use websites if that isn't the same thing I suppose.
