Reading Blog #2

I find it hard to take John Cage's "music" seriously. The definition of music is putting sounds together so it makes harmony. His music doesn't portray that. One person said it could be more considered an art form and I agree with that way more than music. John Cage also said there is no such thing as silence which I also disagree with. I believe silence is the absence of sound. The thing between a cough and shuffle at his 4'33" performance. He wasn't wrong with saying well reach a time when music is made of random noises but they still have harmony. Sometimes he would get upset and strict and reprimand students if they did not perform something he taught them. Which made one student question whys when his stance is supposed to free you from the constraints of what is considered correct music. The fact that he didn't get paid much for all he did even though he was well known and written into history, it does make sense. People getting paid for art or music are very subjective. It is very cool that his impression of music and sound still influences many to this day. And changes how people perceive and hear sounds in their daily life. It personally makes me appreciate it more the sounds of a busy city, traffic, or nature more.
